Thanksgiving/Christmas Decorating

We had a great Thanksgiving weekend! The academy gave me Thursday night off and all day Saturday as well. This will be the longest break given until I graduate in July. We were able to decorate the inside and outside of the house for Christmas. Stacie our former nanny came over to help out. The boys miss her very much and we are sad to see her leave for Michigan in a few weeks. This is where she is from and she will finish up her degree there.

The boys had a great time helping out. No one wanted to help daddy outside, however.

We bought a little tree that the boys decorated upstairs. This will be the tree that they will be able to decorate with the ornaments that they make at school.

This was a tradition in Laurel's family.

For Thanksgiving, we drove to Mesa and brought Laurel's parents over. They were delighted to visit our house, see the decorations and for the Thanksgiving Feast. With two round trips equaling close to 5 hours and cooking the dinner, it was a bit exhausting, but enjoyable. With both her parents 90 years old, we see them slipping pretty fast so we try to make the most out of our time with them.

Farm Day

Laurel took the boys out a few Saturdays ago to Farm Day here in Maricopa. ASU has a huge Agricultural Center in Maricopa and they put on a great Farm Day with a lot of activities and equipment to check out.

Halloween

I had academy on Halloween. Of course, it is also Laurel's Birthday as well. As luck would have it, academy went way late. I had some carved pumpkins to place out and when I got home, I raced to place them outside and finished lighting them when the last of the tricker treaters had left. The boys made a great haul this year. Between the two of them, they filled a brown grocery bag full. What is ironic is that we haven't eaten sugar in the house for several months now! Well the holidays will change that. Christian

Camping

Since I have Sundays off, we decided to take Monday off as well and go camping for a night in the Coronado National Forest outside of Tucson.

Kaden reading

Kaden loves to read. He will pick up any book now and read through it. It is fun to see how much his love for reading grows the more he does it.

Police Academy

Well, I am 3 1/2 weeks into police academy, however it feels like several months. This academy is designed for people who have full time jobs, so it is every Tuesday and Thursday night from 6-10 and every Saturday for the entire day. With the workload and the drive time, I am easily putting in 35-40 extra hours a week, so we are extremely busy. This academy has more hours and tests than traditional academy, lasting almost 11 months. Everything is going well and I am towards the top of the class academically as well as physically.

We put Kaden in a new school this year; this one focuses much more academically as well as going back to the basics of education. They are more strict/formal (folded hands when seated, etc.), focus on patriotism, and maintain an academic standard at the top of a class rather than in the middle or even lower end. It is called Legacy Traditional School, Kaden loves it. He was so far advanced in his other school they would not have been able to teach him anything even if they used the end of the year curriculum. So, we are all happy with the move.

August, is growing so much. It is fun to see his personality form and how different it is from Kaden. Kaden is a born natural when it comes to academics and any sport involving a ball. August on the other hand is a natural ham and much more coordinated in all other physical aspects. He learned to ride a bike with no training wheels the month he turned 3!! He is also a stout daredevil jumping off any rock, table or object he can climb.

With how busy we are, we have scaled back the business, but Laurel is doing very well in one hospital system she works for. She is loved so much by the President and Vice President, they can’t send enough personal letters thanking her for everything she has accomplished.

So, unfortunately, I am unable to devote much time to family life for awhile but every now and then I am able to get a half day or an hour during dinner time to have fun. Here we are at a park enjoying a cool afternoon. The summer heat is on its way out.

Since I will be a reserve officer with the City of Maricopa I will try and snap a picture when I get my uniform and duty gear.

River Raft Ride!!

While on vacation we went out on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. The boys loved it!

Because it is a glacial river, the water is very cold and has a till that makes it turquoise in color.

August is looking at the fish.

Here they are being dunked by our guide!!! I was very surprised they handled it as well as they did. That water was cold! It was a hot day though.

It definately took Kaden's breath away.

Visiting Family

Vacation in Glacier

We had a great time in Montana this vacation! Glacier was beautiful and the temperatures were perfect having come from 110 degree weather.

Hiking up to Avalanche Lake.

The boys did a lot of hiking including around the cabin area. This is one trail just a hundred yards from the cabin we stay at. It had an "enchanted forest" feel with the green light shining through the trees and falling on the clover covered trail.

The boys biggest past time is throwing rocks in Lake McDonald. Papa says the goal is to fill the lake up.

Obviously, each of them has their own way of filling it up...

We were able to meet a high school buddy of mine, Korey Danielson. Here he is with his wife, Theresa and daughter McKenna.

1st Grade!

Kaden is very excited to start school this year. This will be his first full day. Last year, during kindergarten, he noticed all the other kids going off to the cafeteria with their lunch boxes when he had to go home. Now he has his lunch box and he has been "practicing" eating from it all last week.

All summer long Kaden has been reading and working on his math. He insists on having me make up a 30-40 problem quiz every day so he can practice math and he wants me to grade them. So far with a test every day he is holding an A average. Then, when he has spare time, he gets on the computer and joins kids from all over the world to compete in small math tests with them! He is crazy!

But, he loves the competition and having to solve problems quickly in his head (and fingers). During the quiz, there are two icons indicating his speed vs. the other child's speed that he loves to watch.

Hernia Surgery

Kaden had his surgery today. Everything went very smoothly. This was his second time having this surgery so he should be all done! As was typical the last time, he wants to run around already and he has very little pain. He did such a good job, he was not scared at all! He is really an amazing kid.

Swimming lessons

Swimming lessons are going great. Both boys are doing very well.

August is a natural.

Kaden has improved so much I am very amazed. He is now best in his class.

This a great way to spend the morning considering it is already well into the 100's.

A public pool right behind us!

What a weekend we had! We first taught August how to ride his bike!
(See the post below this one...)

Then we discovered a public pool that is only a two minute drive south of us. It is on the Ak-Chin Reservation. Harrah's casino, which is a stone's throw away from our house, does very well and obviously helped supplement such an incredible pool.

It even has a huge water slide!

What I love about it is that I have been wanting to begin training for the Ironman and with this so close, they have a lap pool where I can practice! Although, now that I have been allowed to go to academy as a reserve police officer for the City of Maricopa, it will have to be after academy which will be 10 long months beginning in September.

Kaden and August are both learning to swim very well and they have only had one week's worth of lessons! Kaden's free style is looking very good.

Having fun

What a summer so far! Boy, have we been busy. Kaden and August both can ride their bikes. August still has the training wheels on, but he learned to pedal finally! Kaden has been doing great and despite the heat, he insists on going out every day (even if it is 103 degrees) right before his bedtime to get a few minutes in.

The boys are taking swimming lessons this summer and having a fun time! Both are doing very well. Kaden needs a bit more time to get used to the idea of it, but he is determined not to let the water intimidate him. August insists on spending his time under the water much to the chagrin of his teacher.

August is keeping the Spirit of Christmas alive. This one never ceases to amaze me. There is not a week that has gone by that he doesn't talk about how much he loves Christmas and how wonderful Santa Clause is. He has a little stuffed bear that has a Santa hat on it and that is the toy he can be seen with night and day. For the last month or so he insists on wearing his Christmas PJ's. ...and it is the middle of July?!!!

Lately he has been wearing a blanket for a cape and wants us to call him King.

Our business continues to do well. At one point last month we thought we lost it all in one week, but miraculously, (Praise God!!) it turned back around for us and become all the more stable. Laurel is hard at work and almost finished earning her CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive)title.

We also have spent a considerable amount of time researching and studying our diet. After reading Dee McCaffrey’s book “Plan-D, The Amazing Anti-Diet” we were able to completely eliminate processed foods from our diet, mainly white sugar and flour. There is far too much in the book to write about, but by eliminating so much of the synthetic, manufactured food products from our system and getting the nutrition found naturally in food, we have both lost weight without any other means. McCaffrey's bottom line is that much of the ingredients found in food these days are the cause of many diseases, cancers and has very little nutritional value to begin with. The good news is that we didn't have to change our budget to do it! ...and we had a small budget to begin with!

Last, I still hope the Police Department receives a grant to hire this fall, but I have been allowed to go to an academy which will be spread out over 10 months (classes are Saturday, and two evenings) to become a Reserve Officer. So, we will be very busy when the academy starts in September.

Kaden's front tooth fell out today!

The other one is close to coming out. I am sure he will be missing his two front teeth for Christmas.

What a toothless grin!

Kaden's Birthday!

Kaden turned six this last Saturday. He had a great party and got lots of presents. As most of you know, Kaden has a blanket he sleeps with that his Great Grandma gave him when he was born. This weekend, we officially packed it away. I will show you what it looks like in another post; there is not much left of it. It was very traumatic for him. He misses it most at night but he is doing very well.

Kaden is very good at baseball. We had him hitting balls off of a tee for a very short time. He is now being pitched to.

He would rather watch two hours of a documentary about Earth than any cartoon show. He loves the BBC series.

This year we had the great idea of bringing the laptop down with the webcam so Momo and Papa could watch from Billings. They are able to see him open all of his presents and talk to him as if they were there with us in the living room.

What a fun weekend!!

We had friends from Missoula come down this weekend and stay several days. Sam and Steph have two girls close to Kaden's and August's age. We did so much!

Here we are cooling off. If you look closely you can see the temp. is 95 and it was 10:00 in the morning. We are now into our 100 degree weather...

We went to a place that was like a big McDonalds/Burger King funland. This was a giant tree house with tubes and walkways, and slides in every imaginable configuration going up several stories. Some of the tunnels even went under the tree!

Kaden and Amaya (Sam and Steph's oldest)

Sam and Steph with their youngest, Reesa. With the red hair she could have been Laurel's daughter!

We went to the zoo and got to feed the giraffes! The kids fed them pellets and Kaden was wanting to feed this huge giraffe one pellet at a time! He was very patient...

August loved it!

We got to take a ride over the zoo.

We had a great time and the boys were sad to see their friends leave as did Laurel and I.
